How not to do fan funding
What's the best way to screw up fan funding? So, we have cancelled our fan funding attempt. It was something that we always considered a long shot but to make things worse we also made a mistake in the way we set up our campaign. Indiegogo lets you set your campaign up as either "Fixed Funding" (just like Kickstarter) or "Flexible Funding" which allows you to keep all funds raised even if you don't meet your target. In our ignorance we went with flexible funding thinking that rather than state a minimum target and offer various improvements to Ashes at higher funding levels we'd state our dream target first. Something we didn't consider is that if the funds we raised were insignificant the money people pledged would effectively go to waste. It became obvious however after we launched and so we attempted to change our funding method to "fixed". This was apparently a simple thing to do but when we asked for clarification from Indiegogo that everything was ok they told us that "we shouldn't have been able to change the funding method" and that we'd have to cancel the current campaign and start again. Well that would be the perfect way to suck what little interest there was out of the whole campaign so we decided to cancel the campaign. We would have brought this news sooner but what followed was 10 days of back and forth emails with Indiegogo to get them to refund those few that had contributed to your project. In Indiegogo's defense there were various complications but thankfully they eventually found a way to make it happen.
For those few that were bold enough to contribute we have offered the game for free once it's complete, a selection of "rewards" from the Indiegogo campaign and a chance to test Ashes at various stages of development.

Ashes Seeks Fan Funding
With all the various Kickstarter initiatives recently we thought we'd see if we could get funding for an indie RPG project. We don't have a classic RPG franchise to reignite but we do have a passion for the genre and we share similar philosophies to the classics. But Ashes isn't just a homage to the way RPG games used to be, it has it's own unique identity. A unique world, a unique story and a unique blend of features that we believe will make it a great game. We're not stupid, we know it's a long shot but if you don't try...
We originally wanted to launch our funding campaign through Kickstarter but unfortunately they don't support non US residents so instead we had to go with Indiegogo. Below you can see our launch video and here is our Indiegogo page.
